Abstract

Introduction: Craniopharyngiomas in the retrochiasmatic space are challenging tumors to remove given the anatomical location and surrounding vital structures. Retrochiasmatic craniopharyngiomas are thought to arise from a supradiaphragmatic origin and are often hidden behind the optic chiasm and extend superiorly into the third ventricle. Surgical removal of these lesions has been associated with a high rate of surgical morbidity and mortality, as well as incomplete removal resulting in higher recurrence rates. We report our experience with removal of retrochiasmatic craniopharyngioma using the extended endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach.
