Abstract

Serious doubts have been raised about development of children born after assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as IVF and ICSI. These qualms are more specifically related to the possibility of gene defects, whether linked to imprinting patterns or gene mutations. Well-characterized imprinting diseases in humans include Angelman and Beckwith-Wiedemann syndromes. These disorders are the result of defects in DNA methylation, interfering with gene expression and leading to growth pattern distortion, mental retardation, and slow language development.
