Abstract

Expression of sialosyl Tn antigen (STN) of surgically resected spesimens in human gastric cancers, using the monoclonal antibody (TKH-2), was evaluated immunohistochemically in 42 patients measured serum STN level and in 45 patients with advanced cancer followed over five years after gastrectomy. Staining intensity was graded as follows: (-), less than 5% of cancer lesion; (+), 5–50%; (++), more than 50%. STN was mainly stained in cell membranes and cytoplasm, and the positive rate was 57.2%, which was higher than that of serum STN level. The positive rate of STN in differentiated adenocarcinoma was higher than in undifferentiated adenocarcinoma. Advanced cases indicated a tendency to express in more cancer lesion than did early cases. The estimate 5-year survival in advanced cases was better in negative cases than in positive cases. These results suggest that STN is available for a useful tumor marker in advanced case of gastric cancer.
