Abstract

Histochemical investigations have been carried out on 134 placentas, 3 to 20 weeks old, collected from the service for the requested interruption of pregnancy. The results, expressing the incidence of avascularity, stromal edema, and epithelial stratification, demonstrate the association o f the three histologic elements in producing the characteristic appearance of the “molar type.” This normally lasts up to the age of 12 to 14 weeks. Observations were also made on the transformation of intervillous cytotrophoblast masses into P.A.S.-positive fibrinoid material. This process starts at the eighth to tenth week of gestation, and becomes general at the same time as the vascularization of the villi. Hence, fibrinoid degeneration appears to be evidence of placental maturation, contributing to the formation of intervillous “pseudoinfarction” and indirectly to functional changes in the villous syncytium.
