Abstract

Publisher Summary The purpose of growing fetal hypothalamic cells in culture is to help in the understanding of mechanisms that control their development and, by the same time, to provide an in vitro system where the integrity of the neuronal structures will be maintained. The culture of fetal hypothalamic cells in completely defined medium is possible. It permits the analysis in culture of several parameters of neuronal development: synaptogenesis, development of same neuronal function, at least cholinergic neurons, and ability to release or to degrade neuropeptides. It responds to hormonal modifications of the medium, at very low concentrations. The use of a serum free medium for growing normal fetal hypothalamic cells offers a promising model for studying neuro-endocrine regulatory mechanisms in culture.
