Abstract

Objective To investigate the expression of hepcidin in the peripheral blood of patients with breast cancer, and to explore its role in the pathogenesis of breast cancer. Methods A total of 58 preoperative patients with breast cancer as well as 58 healthy control patients were recruited from Weihai central hospital; and their blood samples were collected to detect the expressions of hepcidin, ferroportin, ferritin and hemoglobin in the serum. Results The levels of hepcidin (Z=6.63, P<0.000 1) and ferritinin (t=9.00, P<0.000 1) were significantly higher and the level of ferroportin (t=9.00, P<0.000 1) was significantly lower in the breast cancer patients than in healthy controls. The expression of hepcidin was not related to hemoglobin (t=0.89, P=0.38) level in the breast cancer patients. Conclusions The elevated expression of hepcidin in serum of breast cancer patients may be related to the occurrence and development of breast cancer. Therefore, the detection of hepcidin in serum have certain clinical significance in the treatment of breast cancer. Key words: Breast cancer; Hepcidin; Ferroportin; Ferritin
