Abstract

Objective To investigate the expression of adhesion molecules galectin-3 (Gal-3) and CA242 protein in human gastric carcinoma in the aged and their relationship with the pathological behavior and prognosis. Methods Immunohistochemical staining was used to detect the expression of Gal-3 and CA242 protein in 60 cases of gastric carcinoma,30 cases of gastric epithelial dysplasia and 20 cases of normal gastric mucosa. The study was also combined with analysis of the pathological behavior and clinical follow-up survey of aged gastric carcinoma patients. Results The positive expression rate of Gal-3 and CA242 protein in gastric carcinoma was 65.0% (39/60) and 81.7% (49/60),respectively.The positive rates of Gal-3 and CA242 in aged gastric carcinoma patients were higher than those in epithelial dysplasia and normal gastric mucosa (P < 0.05).The expression of Gal-3 and CA242 was closely related to serosa infiltration, lymph node metastasis and prognosis of patients (P < 0.05).Positive correlation was found between Gal-3 and CA242 protein (r =0.32,P < 0.05).Conclusions The expression of Gal-3 and CA242 is closely related to carcinogenesis, metastasis and survival rate in aged gastric carcinoma patients.Gal-3 and CA242 may be prognostic indicators of aged gastric carcinoma patients.
