Abstract

Objective To evaluate the transcriptional and translational expression of CYR61 and CTGF in the stenotic tissue of congenital pelvi-ureteric junction obstruction (UPJ). Methods Transcriptional and translational expression of CYR61 and CTGF were determined by RT-PCR and western blot in stenotic tissue of 38 UPJ patients. Ureters from 12 patients without UPJ were taken as controls. Results The mRNA and protein expression of CYR61 and CTGF in stenosis tissue of UPJ was lower than that of control ureters (P<0.05). The expression of CYR61 was lower in severe UPJs than that in mild to moderate UPJs (P<0.05). But no difference was noted between the mild and moderate UPJs (P>0.05). There was no correlation between the expression of CTGF and the severity of UPJ (P>0.05). Conclusions The expressions of CYR61 and CTGF in UPJ are lower than those of normal ureters. Decreased expression of CYR61 may be associated with increased severity of UPJ. Key words: Ureteral obstruction; Urologic diseases
