Abstract

Due to the various factors like expression, pose, illumination and accessory variation etc., human face seem different in multiple occasions. To determine the efficiency of the different face recognition algorithms, it requires benchmark face images. In this paper, we presented a comprehensive study of the available 2D face databases and also introduces the creation of a visual face database, Xinjiang University 1 (XJU1) Face Database, which is under development in the College of Information Science and Engineering. It contains high quality face images of 254 individuals of different ethnic of collected from the Xinjiang province of China. Database images are captured within a room with controlled variations in expression, pose and illumination along with variability in age, gender, accessories, and partial occlusion. Each image contains the combined primary challenges of face recognition, i.e., expression, pose, and illumination. In order to show the usability of the database, we four baseline face recognition algorithms have also been tested on the XJU1 face database, which may be used as the control algorithm performance score by other researchers.
