Abstract
Objective To study the correlation between the expression of aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 (ALDH1) and WHO grades of glioma or overall survival (OS) of patients with glioma. Methods The expression of ALDH1 in 298 gliomas samples was detected by using immunohistochemical staining. The correlation between the ALDH1 expression and WHO grades of glioma or OS of patients with glioma was statistically analyzed. Results The percentage of ALDH1 positive cells in glioma samples of WHO grade Ⅱ was (15 ±10)%,(31 ±25)% in WHO Ⅲ and (48 ±29)% in WHO Ⅳ respectively. The ALDH1 expression was positively correlated with WHO grades of glioma (P < 0.05).Multivariate Cox survival analysis revealed that ALDH1 was a prognostic marker for the patients'poor OS,independent of patients'age,WHO grades and degree of resection (hazard ratio:16.46,95% confidence interval:5.59-54.48,P <0.001).Conclusion ALDH1 may contribute to the development and progression of glioma and its higher expression indicates poorer OS of patients with glioma. Key words: Glioma; Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 ; Prognosis
