Abstract
Objective To investigate the expression of Sonic hedgehog (SHH) and E-cadherin in human chronic cholecystitis.Methods 120 post-operative specimens of cholecystitis and 36 post-operative specimens of gallbladder carcinoma were selected in Wuhan General Hospital of Guangzhou Military Comman from February 2005 to May 2010.The expression of SHH and E-cadherin proteins in 45 specimens of mild cholecystitis,45 specimens of moderate cholecystitis,30 specimens of severe cholecystitis and 36 specimens of gallbladder carcinoma was detected by using immunohistochemistry.Results There was significant difference among the four groups in average gray scale aud positive unit of SHH and E-cadherin (P＜0.01).There was significant difference between the groups of stone size (d ＞3 cm vs ≤3 cm)(P ＜0.01 ).However,there was no significant difference between age groups,and gender groups in SHH and E-cadherin expression value ( all P ＞ 0.05 ).The expression of SHH was inversely correlated with E-cadherin ( raverage gray scale=- 0.73,Υpositive unit =- 0.75,P ＜ 0.01 ).Conclusion Sonic hedgehog and E-cadherin are activated in the tissue of chronic cholecystitis and gallbladder carcinoma,suggesting they may play an important role in the development and transformation of gallbladder carcinoma.
