Abstract

Objective To investigate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-13 (MMP-13) mRNA in giant cell tumor of bone ( GCT) and the correlation between Jaffe pathological grade and Campanacci radiological grade. Methods Forty-five patients with GCT were divded into grade Ⅰ,Ⅱ,Ⅲ groups according to the Jaffe pathological grade and Campanacci radiological grade method. The MMP-13 mRNA expression was detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The correlation of MMP-13 between the Jaffe pathological grade and Campanacci radiological grade was analyzed with the spearman method. Results The MMP-13 mRNA ratio was 0. 58 ± 0. 06, 0.65 ± 0. 04, 0. 62 ± 0. 05 in Ⅰ,Ⅱ,Ⅲgroups respectively according to the Jaffe pathological grade. The ratio of MMP-13 mRNA between groups had no significant difference (P > 0.05). MMP-13 mRNA ratio was 0. 42 ± 0. 05, 0. 63 ± 0.07, 0. 85 ± 0. 09 in groups Ⅰ , Ⅱ,Ⅲ respectively according to the Campanacci radiological grade. There was significant difference in the MMP-13 mRNA ratio among the groups ( P < 0.01). The expression level of MMP-13 mRNA was positive correlation with the Campanacci radiological grade (P <0. 05). Conclusion The expression of MMP-13 may therefore provide some prognostic indication of the Campanacci radiological grade method in GCT.
