Abstract

Objective To evaluate the role of matrix metallo proteinase-9 (MMP-9) and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) in the pathogenesis of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy. Methods Serum MMP-9 and VEGF levels were determined in 80 patients with hypertensive disorders in pregnancy and 30 healthy pregnancy women by ELISA assay. Results Serum MMP-9 levels and VEGF were significantly lower in the patients with hypertensive disorders in pregnancy than those in healthy controls (P < 0.05).Serum MMP-9 and VEGF levels in moderate PIH were significantly lower than that in mild PIH (P < 0.05).Serum MMP-9 and VEGF levels in severe PIH were significantly lower than that in moderate PIH (P < 0.05).Positive correlation was found between MMP-9 and VEGF expressions. Conclusions MMP-9 and VEGF may play an important role in the change of the pathophysiology of PIH and may be used as an indicato for the severity of PIH. Key words: Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy;  Matrix metallo proteinase-9;  Vascular endothelial growth factor
