Abstract

Objective To explore the role of Wnt/β-catenin signal transduction pathway in the aspect of tumorigenesis of brainstem and supratentorial gliomas by detecting the expression of β-catenin.Methods The expression of β-catenin was detected in 6 normal brain tissue,10 grade Ⅱ brainstem gliomas and 10 grade Ⅱ supratentorial gliomas by immunohistochemistry and Western blot. Results β-catenin was expressed in cell membrane of normal brain tissue, while expressed in cytoplasm of brainstem and supratentorial gliomas. No significant difference was indicated between the three groups(P>0.05) by semiquantitative analysis of β-catenin electrophoretic bands. Conclusions Although Wnt/β-catenin signal transduction pathway was involved in the tumorigenesis of gliomas,it was probably not a key factor which caused a worse prognosis of brainstem gliomas compared with supratentorial gliomas. Key words: Gliomas; Brainstem; β-catenin; Immunohistochemistry; Western blot
