Abstract

(Anesth Analg. 2020;131:1421–1429) Postpartum depression (PPD) affects up to 1 in 7 women in the United States. There is a need to identify actionable risk factors for PPD prior to the beginning of depressive symptoms. Cesarean delivery has been associated with increased risk of PPD compared to vaginal delivery. There have not been any studies investigating the effect of anesthesia mode on risk of PPD. This study hypothesized that general anesthesia for cesarean delivery, compared with neuraxial anesthesia, would increase the risk of severe PPD.
