Abstract

Significance The goal seems to be to protect Chinese firms’ market dominance in this sector rather than to retaliate against foreign export controls targeting China. The level of Chinese dominance in solar PV manufacturing already makes it hard for foreign competitors to catch up on volume or price. Impacts Over the short term, Chinese PV firms’ production at home and in South-east Asia will continue to service most global demand. Outside the US and EU markets, Chinese firms are likely to maintain dominance in solar panels, components and manufacturing equipment. Chinese solar PV firms will increase their innovation at the technological frontier, potentially benefitting China's semiconductor industry.
