Abstract

In this work an explosive line welding configurations are used for the bonding of light-weight metal sheets. Materials involved are aluminum alloys 5052-O, 6061-T6, 6383-T4 and 7075-T6, and a commercially pure titanium (TP270C). Plates of similar and dissimilar metal combinations are welded over a small overlapping area using explosive welding. After welding samples were taken to perform shear strength tests. The strength tests indicate a remarkable good bonding between similar metals. Line welding shows a high strength to explosive mass ratio, making it a good candidate to be scaled up and used in commercial applications. Moreover explosive forming of aluminum alloys 5052-O was investigated. When an suitable explosive forming method was chosen, an extreme high deformability of the aluminum ally plate could be obtained.Copyright © 2004 by ASME
