Abstract

This thesis examines early Japanese tourist photography from 1853-1890. Using three albums of travel photographs from the University of St. Andrews Special Collections Department collected between 1857-1890, this thesis looks to examine and analyze the relationship between the emergent tourist industry, the album’s subjects, the ukiyo-e genre and the Tōkaidō road.
