Abstract

This paper examines the existing field of digital innovation publications in management and business journals. Due to the exponential growth of digital technology adoptions in companies, much attention has been given to the new phenomenon of digital innovation. Prior literature reviews have attempted to explore the phenomenon but they seem to lack objectivity and are limited in scope. By applying three bibliometric techniques – co-citation, co-occurrence, and bibliographic coupling analysis – we provide a holistic overview of the digital innovation publications. We employ 354 primary documents, identify three foundational themes from which digital innovation draws on, and seven emerging topics. We conclude with recommendations for future research in the field of innovation management.
