Abstract

David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas is a seminal work in contemporary literature, renowned for its complex narrative structure and exploration of postmodern themes. This paper delves into the novel’s innovative use of temporal loops and non-linear time, which challenge conventional storytelling conventions and offer new insights into the nature of narrative and time. By analyzing the interconnectedness of the six stories and the thematic implications of the novel’s temporal structure, this study highlights how Cloud Atlas contributes to a deeper understanding of postmodern narrative techniques and the cyclical conception of history. The paper argues that Mitchell’s novel not only entertains but also provokes reflection on the interconnectedness of human lives across time and the potential for change within the flow of history.
