Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the possibility of vocational education and training for middle-aged women by examining the meaning of participation of vocational education and training. To this end, we conducted focus group interviews (FGI) on middle-aged women participating in the Middle-aged Vocational Academy. As a result of the study, we found out that, middle-aged women participated in vocational education and training with various motivations apart from employment. In the process of participating in vocational education and training, these middle-aged women felt satisfaction with ‘learning’ itself. Participation in vocational education and training contributed to revitalizing life and designing a new future for middle-aged women who are in a time when they are vulnerable to depression and lethargy. However, vocational education and training programs run with short training time and process to acquire expertise were not enough to support the practical employment of middle-aged women. Based on the study findings, we discussed thedevelopment of vocational education and training for middle-aged women and suggested policy support.
