Abstract

Abstract Introduction: Aging is the process of becoming older. Earlier old age homes were known by the name of Alms-houses. In recent time’s individualism, independence, and achieved position in the family have become a part of family culture in India. Sometimes, the separation is generated by the old themselves when they feel self-sufficient and desire independence. The practice of institutionalizing the elderly population is a broad-spreading concept in the modern world, and the number of old age homes is increasing at an alarming rate. Materials and Methods: The study explores the life experiences of the elderly living in a paid old age home. Samples were selected from an old age home with a population above the age of 65 years and institutionalized for at least 1 year. Case studies helped to fulfil the study objectives, and a semi-structured interview guide was also used. Results and Conclusion: The study found social, family, and personal issues among the elderly; some also have psycho-social issues and need specialized care at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels.
