Abstract

Colors and lighting influence people's perceptions and emotions, which also play a vital role in a large number of works in the horror genre in games and other media. However, there is little research about how colors and lighting influence fear in Chinese horror. This research aims to explore the effects of colors and lighting in a horror game based on a Chinese folk tale. I designed a game by adapting one of the Chinese horror mythological systems: "Difu", with five types of colors and lighting. The results about participants' attitudes and feelings were collected by a survey, interviews recording their responses while playing. The results showed that colors and lighting evoked participants' association with horror, and cultural differences also influenced people's emotional responses to color. Based on the research findings, I also made recommendations on designing horror games that allow players to experience the fascination of Chinese horror without background knowledge of Chinese folklore. --Author's abstract
