Abstract

Seismic investigations of lithospheric structures associated with subduction megathrusts are critical to understanding the mechanics of the interplate seismogenic zone, where very destructive, great subduction earthquakes occur. Several factors have been proposed as controlling interplate coupling and tectonic regime of the margin, including sea‐floor relief and the possible re‐activation of such oceanic features when subducted, and the subduction or accretion of high‐fluid content sediment.
