Abstract

The transitive into -ing pattern can be used in innovative and unexpected ways, and the chapter explores unexpected usages of the pattern in recent American English, with evidence from the TIME Corpus. The decades from the 1920s to the 2000S are considered, and the study identifies two groups of matrix verbs that select the pattern in usages that are unexpected, taking the OED into account as a yardstick of comparison. It is argued that a constructional analysis can be given even for the unexpected usages.Keywordsproductivity of constructionsTIME Corpustransitive into -ing pattern
