Abstract

Introduction This case narrates the different stages planning of tourism in a mountainous area of Slovakia over a couple of centuries, with particular attention to the highly structured planning of communist times. It can help academics and students of tourism, economics, history, rural planning and other disciplines understand how such areas were perceived and planned over time and the modern legacy of past planning policies. For students studying the history of tourism, it provides a valuable perspective on how tourism evolved in the mountain resorts of central Europe and how decisions were taken at a policy level in the post-war communist era. The logic of that period is similar to that of many countries around the world today where planning is centralized.
