Abstract

Introduction: The benefits of regular sport participation are well established, yet stark differences in sport participation rates exist between adolescent males and their female counterparts. Evidence suggests that female participation rates rapidly decline from the age of 10, and factors including changing motivations, competing priorities and lack of confidence may be preventing girls from participating in organised sport. Little is still known however, about the specific factors relating to school and club sport participation in adolescent girls. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to explore the barriers and facilitators specific to school and club sport participation contexts.
