Abstract

At the intersection of queer studies, the horror genre, and video games is the potential for creating queer experiences. This thesis examines that intersection and interrogates the awareness of queerness in games from a queer audience. The Twine game You're Going to be Late was first created as an exploration of queer temporality through game mechanics, after which a study was performed to get feedback from queer gamers and game developers regarding the game and encouraging discussion regarding what they thought "queer mechanics" meant to them. In doing so this thesis aims to develop a deeper understanding of non-normative game mechanics and advocate for the use of queer temporality in games as well as for the education of queer gamers and game developers in the possibilities for queerness in games besides on solely a representational level.--Author's abstract
