Exploring on the logical models of 'self-epic' - focused on the autobiographical essays of Kyungsik Seo & Sangjung Kang

Abstract

이 글은 자기 성찰적 글쓰기를 인문학적 지평으로 확장․심화시키기 위한 의도에서 시작되었다. 정체성 탐색이나 ‘자기 표현’ 능력의 신장에 그치지 않고, 타자와 세계에로 보폭을 넓히는 확장적․관계적 사유의 작업이 작금의 자기 성찰적 글쓰기에 요청된다. 본고는 서경식과 강상중의 자전적 에세이를 대상으로 그것을 실제화시키기 위한 구체적 모형을 고민했다. 서경식과 강상중은 ‘자기 정체성’의 고민을 그들의 학문적 도정 속에서 문제화하여 사상적으로 확장, 심화, 융합한 구체적 사례이다. 그들이 풀어낸 자기 서사는 개인의 것에 그치지 않고 현대 사회의 여러 징후와 문제점들을 압축적으로 재현하고 있으며, 현재의 대학생들이 겪을 수 있는 동류의 정체성 고민과 성장통을 담아내고 있다. 즉 삶과 사상, 개인적 경험과 시대적 인식이 긴밀히 결합되어 있다는 점은 그들의 자기 서사가 갖는 주요한 특징이자 강점이다. 이러한 점에서 그들의 자전적 에세이는 대학생들이 자기 서사를 구성하는 데 있어 필요한 보편적․인문학적 심화와 확장의 단서를 찾을 수 있는 유용한 표본이자 참조점이다. 이들의 자전적 에세이를 대상으로 필자는 자기 서사의 논리적 모형을 세가지로 제시하였다. 인물 참조의 모형, 사회․역사적 구조화의 모형, 책 참조의 모형이 그것이다. 세 가지 모형은 모두 ‘나’와 맞닿은 타자․세계를 경유하여 ‘나-세계’의 보편적 의미에 도달하는, ‘참조’와 ‘중첩’의 원리를 기반으로 하고 있다. 이들 모형을 통한 자기 서사의 논리적 확장 작업은 기존의 자기 서사가 놓칠 수 있었던 몇몇 유의미한 성과들을 예시한다. 첫째, 개별자의 삶을 거시적 구조 속에서 재정위할 수 있다. 둘째, 자기 서사를 ‘연결과 확장의 텍스트’로 인식하고 스스로 체화해내는 실제적인 훈련 과정을 마련할 수 있다. 셋째, 자기 서사의 구축이 궁극적으로 연대의 감각과 윤리적 글쓰기로 향하는 것을 경험할 수 있다. 넷째, 소수자로서의 개인의 세계를 복원하고 동시에 주류 질서의 균열과 공백을 명시화할 수 있다.This paper is originated from the idea that self-reflective writing should be deepened and expanded to the humanistic horizon. The self-reflective writing have to go forward the fields of ‘Others’ and ‘World’, in addition to exploring own identity and extending the self-expression. In other words, it is required to work through the expansive and relational thought. Under this perception, I considered the concrete model that actualize the expansive and relational thought. Kyungsik Seo and Sangjung Kang is the person who keenly think the problem of self-identity, and their writing is results of thinking that made of personal experience and private thought. Consequently, their writings consist of the combination of own life and thought , or their experience and awareness of the Times . That s the key features and strength of their self-epics. In this respect, their self-epics is the useful specimen and reference that present the clue of universal and humanistic deepening and expansion , which students need to carry out when they make up the self-epic. I have presented the logical models of self-epic that is aimed at Mr. Seo and Mr. Kang s autobiographical essays. The models are referring to people , social and historical structuring and referring to books . These three models are based on the principles of reference and overlap , which are for reaching the universal meaning of me-world through Others and World touching me. My work with these models show us the meaningful results, that the established self-epics could have lost. First, this work could redefine the individual s life in a macro structure. Second, this work could prepare a training course for that students recognize the self-epic as a text of connections and extensions and embody it themselves. Third, students could ultimately experience the sense of solidarity and ethical writing. Fourth, this work could restore the individual as a minority, at the same time could clarify the cracks and blanks in the mainstream order.
