Abstract
This article explores carper's fundemental patterns of knowing in nursing from a midwifery perspective. This approach is utilised in an attempt to identify an epistemology of midwifery practice. Emphasis is placed on the need to explore what midwifery is so that midwives critically reflect on practice and in turn provide high quality care.
