Abstract

Continuous endeavour in the quest for superior mechanical and metallurgical properties led to increasing usage of Ni based superalloys during the last two decades. But high strength and high resistance to temperature and corrosion make these alloys difficult to grind. Present investigation highlights the effectiveness of soap water, an eco-friendly, cost-effective fluid while grinding Inconel 718, a well-known superalloy. It is observed that among different methods of application of alkaline soap water, the one in the form of a micro-jet gives the best result in terms of grinding forces, specific energy consumption, surface finish, grinding ratio and chip forms.
