Abstract

ABSTRACT Recent reports from malpractice insurance providers indicate an increase in the frequency of sexual misconduct among practicing counselors. This qualitative content analysis of practicing counselor survey responses (n = 67) examines reported experiences regarding sexual attraction to clients and related coping strategies. Findings suggest the importance of counselors’ emotion regulation in refraining from temptation to act on attraction. The authors propose increased discussion of emotion regulation and sexual attraction to clients in counselor training programs as well as during supervision.
