Exploring Community Artists' Social Practice in the Process of Creating Cultural Public Spheres

Abstract

이 연구의 목적은 문화공론장 조성과정에 참여한 커뮤니티 아티스트의 사회적 실천 양상을 심층적으로 탐색하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 질적연구방법론 중 사례연구방법을 이용하였다. 이 연구의 참여자는 본 연구에서 사례로 제시한 세 곳의 연구사이트에서 문화공론장 조성에 3년 이상 참여한 커뮤니티 아티스트 아홉 명이다. 자료수집 방법으로는 주로 심층면담을 이용하였으며, 보조적으로는 비참여 관찰과 문헌자료를 활용하였다. 커뮤니티 아티스트의 사회적 실천 양상에 대한 분석을 위하여 Usher 등(1997)이 제시한 ‘사회적 실천’을 이론적 프레임워크로 활용하였다. 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 커뮤니티 아티스트의 사회적 실천은 지역 현안을 해결해 나가는 과정에서 얻어진 경험으로서 기존의 지식과 페다고지의 전환점이 될 수 있는 총체적인 학습이었다. 둘째, 세 연구사이트에서 나타난 커뮤니티 아티스트의 사회적 실천은 개인적 욕구의 달성보다는 지역의 공동체성 조성을 위해 거대 담론을 형성하기 위한 공공적 활동이었다. 셋째, 문화공론장 조성은 그 자체로서 커뮤니티 아티스트의 예술적 전문성과 경험, 추구하는 가치를 모두 녹여내는 총체적인 예술활동이었다.The purpose of this study is to explore the social practices of community artists participating in the creation of cultural public spheres. Participants in the study were nine community artists who participated in the creation of cultural public spheres for more than three years. In-depth interviews were mainly used as a method for collecting data, and non-participatory observations and literature were used as a supplementary method. The ‘social practice’ presented by Usher et al. (1997) was utilized as a theoretical framework for the analysis of social practices of community artists. There were three major findings. First, their social practice was the experience obtained in the process of solving current issues, and it was total learning that could be the turning point of existing knowledge and pedagogy. Second, the social practice of community artists in the three cases was to form a huge discourse to improve community in the region rather than to achieve personal desires. Finally, the creation of the cultural public sphere was a total artistic activity that melted all the artistic expertise, experience, and value of community artists.
