Abstract

This study was made to explore the usefulness of the MMPI in understanding and predicting disciplinary type behavior in residence halls. MMPI profiles of 302 men from the 10 most troubled sections of the residence halls were compared with MMPI profiles of 297 men from 10 least troubled sections by the chi‐square statistic. The troubled sections were found to include a larger number of men with high MMPI scores on the exciter scales 4, 8 or 9 (psychopathic deviate, schizophrenic, and hypomania.) The non‐troubled sections included a larger number of men with high scores on the suppressor scales 0, 2 or 5 (social introversion, depression, and masculinity‐feminity.) A cross validation on another population failed to predict problem and non‐problem sections but did suggest that scale 4 predicted individual problem behavior.
