Abstract

Background: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is considered an important prognostic procedure in staging malignant melanomas. Since the location of the SLN can vary, pre-operative SLN-mapping is essential. However, the current gold standard for pre-operative SLN-mapping with dual tracing technique, using the radioisotope Technetium combined with Patent Blue, is associated with several drawbacks (e.g. radiation exposure, allergic reactions, and logistic challenges).
