Abstract
We have found that aryl-substituted α,β-epoxy ketone anion radicals are generated on irradiation in the presence of tertiary amines. The anion radicals formed in this way undergo selective Cα-O bond cleavage. β-Diketones as well as β-hydroxy ketones were obtained in varying ratios, which are governed by the medium (solvent proticity and salt effect), amine cation radical acidity, and the nature of β-substituents
