Abstract

Char obtained from the Great Canadian Oil Sands (GCOS) Corporation, Fort McMurray, Alberta, was burned in the Canadian Combustion Research Laboratory (CCRL) pilot-scale research boiler. When the boiler was equipped with a large, refractory-lined bottom, it duplicated the amount of carbon in fly,ash from the steam generators which burn char at the GCOS plant. This indicates that the research boiler can be used to predict the performance of chars in operating steam generators
