Abstract

In Switzerland, there are over 400 WISEs (work integration enterprises). These are often referred to as enterprises. They employ around 43,000 clients. Their clients are primarily people with mental or psychiatric disabilities who are drawing disability insurance benefits, and also people who receive welfare or unemployment insurance benefits. As part of the National Programme Against Poverty, this study explored the success factors of WISEs in Switzerland. It was conducted by the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), the Swiss Distance University of Applied Sciences (FFHS) and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Italian Switzerland (SUPSI). Since different WISEs have different types of clients and therefore different social objectives, success here is taken to mean (1) the ability of these enterprises to successfully integrate clients into the job market for the first time, but also (2) integration and (3) improved employability thanks to longer-term work in WISEs.
