Abstract

Catalytic effect of various additives on the oxygen-oxidation of p-toluic acid was studied. Under ordinary pressure, the effect of metallic oxides and Br-compounds were studied at 200°C in the absence of solvent. SnO2, Fe2O3, Ag2O, Cr2O3, MoO3, NiO, CdO, Pb3O4 and MnO2 were effective as catalyst, but it was concluded that their catalytic abilities were relatively poor. An organic bromide (benzyl bromide) had little effect under the above-mentioned conditions. At oxygen partial-pressure of 6kg/cm2, using p-di-tert-butylbenzene or o-dichlorobenzene as solvent, the effect of various organic bromides were studied. It was shown that under high oxygen pressure benzyl bromide and bromoform (especially their mixture) had a strikingly accelerating effect on the oxidation rate, but organic chlorides and iodides had a small effect in comparison with bromides.
