Abstract
This article provides recommendations for clinicians concerning the investigations related to sleep disorders in adults and adolescents. Evaluation begins with clinical examination, including interviews of the patient and his family. Additional tests are often recommended to identify sleep disorder. Different tools are presented, useful in investigating sleep (polysomnography, actigraphy, questionnaires, sleep logs), and sleepiness (24h polysomnography, multi sleep latency test, maintenance of wakefulness test, sleepiness scales). We describe also the diagnostic steps for insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, circadian rhythm disorders, and parasomnia.
