Abstract
The Antarctic continent is usually described as consisting of two structural units, East (or Greater) Antarctica and West (or Lesser) Antarctica. This paper traces the early exploration and cartography of East Antarctica and describes the techniques used by Australia in mapping the region covered by the Australian Antarctic Territorial claim. Australia has played a major role in mapping the coastal and mountain features in this part of Antarctica. The application of space imagery to Antarctic cartography is examined and future trends identified in the use of digital topographic data for Geographic Information Systems, used for the coordination of Antarctic scientific data for environmental management purposes.
