Abstract

Islands in the coastal zone can be considered in two groups: those within inshore localities such as the tidal reaches of rivers or estuarine embayments, and those lying offshore. Islands in tidal rivers or estuaries along the coastal zone commonly have shell midden sites on them which appear from survey information to be very similar to adjacent 'mainland' sites.
