Abstract
Exploding head syndrome (EHS) is characterized by a sudden loud noise in the head upon waking up at night or during the wake-sleep transition without associated pain of unknown etiology. Although the prevalence is not certain, surveys have found EHS to be common in the general population and among young adults. Sleep paralysis, insomnia, stress, anxiety, and migraine have been associated. The diagnosis is made by the clinical history without testing. A variety of medications have been reported as effective in case reports. The prognosis is generally good.
