Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper examines the procedure of explicitation in rendering Arabic technical cultural elements into Malay. This study is mainly based on collecting data, including items of food & drinks and clothing, which are taken from Rihlat Ibn Battuta and its Malay translation Pengembaraan Ibn Battuta. This research has been carried out based on the Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS) methodology and a methodological modification of Vinay and Darbelnet’s taxonomy. The findings revealed that explicitation is the most frequently applied procedure in the Arabic-Malay translation, which involves several forms of intratextual and paratextual explicitation.
