Abstract

Two level simulation (TLS) approach based on the explicit reconstruction of the small-scale velocity fields, is extended to study non-homogeneous turbulent flows on coarse grids. Assumptions needed for the simplified treatment of the 3D small-scale governing equation on lines are analyzed using DNS data of well-developed turbulent channel flow. Fully coupled simulations of turbulent channel flow and temporally developed mixing layers suggest that explicit accounting of the small-scale velocity in the large-scale equations allows to correctly predict the large-scale turbulent dynamics without using a concept of eddy-viscosity.
