Abstract

The relaxation of a binary gas mixture is studied with a moment method of solution of the Boltzmann equation, valid for arbitrary mass ratios. In these calculations, the number densities of the two components are taken to be equal and the hard sphere interaction is assumed throughout. The explicit time dependence of the distribution functions is obtained and epochal relaxation is demonstrated and found to occur only for the disparate mass case.
