Abstract

Abstract This chapter builds on the previous two, by linking the theoretical side of expert systems in law with the practicalities of implementation. We are concerned once again, therefore, with a type of computer system that can be said to solve legal problems and offer legal advice. The first part of the chapter offers a non-technical introduction to artificial intelligence and expert systems, while the second provides a theoretical defence of the field of expert systems in law. The third part is practical in orientation, describing an expert system that operates on the English law on latent damage. This system is thought to have been the world’s first commercially available expert system in law, properly so-called. The final part presents some concluding observations.
