Abstract

This paper describes the design and implementation of a cooperating expert system (production rule system) that forms part of an intelligent decision support system for the management of an automated plasma physics laboratory. The traditional approach to the design of computerized control systems requires that the control strategy be known in advance and clearly described in the form of control algorithms. The control strategy used by human experimenters has been studied and a system model and appropriate control rules (productions) have been developed to implement computer control of the experimental system. A production (expert) system program (Newell and Simon, 1972; Post, 1943) was selected for this purpose because of its modular nature and the ease with which it can be modified and updated.
