Abstract

To the Editor.— The letter by Burton L. Wise (235:1425,1976) brings up the important question of bias in expert medical testimony. For the past four years, I have concentrated my practice as a medical witness in litigated cases concerning workmen's compensation. My services were engaged by an attorney representing the insurance companies. The adversary was an attorney representing the worker. I had no conscious or unconscious feeling of bias. I felt only the duty of doing my work in an efficient and thorough manner to determine if the injury or disease was work-related, and if so, the extent and duration of the disabling effects. In most of these cases, there had been medical studies over a period of years, thus requiring a review of all previous records in addition to a determination of his present condition.
