Abstract
Summary (1) A preliminary trial of a new thioxanthone derivative, 27T51, on baboons infected with S. mansoni is described. The compound was at least as active as the miracil D salicylate with which it was compared. (2) Tests of acridine compounds showed them to be active against adult S. mansoni worms in vitro , but unable to maintain high blood levels. 5-heptylaminoacridine may prove to have some action in vivo if its excretion in the urine is sufficiently slow. (3) Hexamidine, at the maximum dosage given for pentamidine, had no effect on infected baboons. (4) It is suggested that investigation of the mode of action of the miracils should be fruitful.
